This is the shortest post ever. The topic didn't exactly fit elsewhere, and it needs to be addressed. More than once, I've been asked if my vegan diet contributed to Tallulah's early arrival. No, it did not. I knew that it didn't and I mentioned this outside concern to my completely conventional doctor--even she said that it was in no way a factor. Sometimes babies are just born prematurely. What could have contributed was working a job where I stand for eight hours, the stress of moving, my feeling the need to finish and accomplish everything quickly, and a possibly weak cervix. None of these are related to a compassionate diet.
My vegan diet did play a part in my pregnancy, and hopefully in Tallulah's speedy trip home. Remember my last panel of blood work, and how stellar it was? After giving birth, I was only sore for about a day and then was already ready to take Gustav on a ten mile walk and finish unpacking--I didn't, because I'm trying to reserve energy and make sure my body does heal completely. I think my healthy state contributed to bouncing back. I also think that Tallulah's homecoming process will be better because of all of the nutrients she will be receiving from my vegan breastmilk.
So, does a vegan diet contribute to a preemie baby? Absolutely not. It can, however, make for a healthier preemie that grows up to love all walks of life and to eat her veggies.
